KOffice – a suite of office applications for the K Desktop Environment (KDE), developed from 1997 to 2011. All its components are published under free and open source licenses. KOffice was not a component of KDE.
KOffice used the OpenDocument format by default.
KOffice components:
– KWord – is an intuitive word processor application with desktop publishing features. With it, you can create informative and attractive documents with ease.
– KCells (or KSpread) – is a fully-featured spreadsheet application. Use it to quickly create spreadsheets with formulas and charts, to calculate and organize your data.
– Showcase (or KPresenter) – is a powerful and easy to use presentation application. You can dazzle your audience with stunning slides containing images, videos, animation and more.
– KPlato – Project Management System with Gantt Charts
– Karbon14 – Vector graphics editor with various drawing and editing tools
– Krita – A raster graphics editor designed for drawing using a tablet device, with a basic set of tools for processing finished images.
– KChart – Integrated Chart Editor
– KFormula – Integrated Formula Editor
Along with the package, the following were also developed:
– Kivio – A diagramming program
– Kexi – A Microsoft Access-like program that works with both local (native format) and remote databases
KOffice development began in 1997 with the creation of KPresenter by Reginald Stadlbauer and then KWord, added in 1998.
The first official release of KOffice was on October 23, 2000, as part of K Desktop Environment 2.0. Version 1.1 was released in 2001, 1.2 in 2002, 1.3 in 2004, 1.4 in 2005, 1.5 and 1.6 in 2006.
Since the release of KDE Software Compilation 4, KOffice has undergone significant changes. In 2009, KOffice 2.0 was released, using the new KDE Platform 4 libraries.
In mid-2010, due to disagreements between KWord maintainer Thomas Sander and other key developers, the KOffice community split into two separate communities—KOffice and Calligra. Some applications were renamed to indicate their affiliation with the KOffice suite. KSpread was forked as KCells, KPresenter was renamed KOffice Showcase, and Karbon14 was renamed KOffice Artwork. In Calligra, the forked applications were developed independently, also under new names.
KOffice 2.3, released on December 31, 2010, along with subsequent patch releases (2.3.1–2.3.3), was the result of a joint effort by both the KOffice and Calligra development teams.
The developers planned to release new versions of KOffice every six months, starting with KOffice 2.4, to coincide with KDE Software Compilation 4. However, this version never came out, and KOffice saw no active development after mid-March 2012. In September 2012, the koffice.org website began displaying alt text. On October 22, KDE removed KOffice from the list of projects on their website.
