Netscape Mail & Newsgroups (Netscape Mail) – an email client produced by Netscape Communications Corporation as part of the Netscape suite series, between versions 4.5 and 7.2.
Previously, there were two distinct programs known as Netscape Messenger and Netscape Collabra between versions 4 and 4.5 of Netscape Communicator.
Netscape Mail & Newsgroups supports the most popular protocols, such as IMAP, POP3, and SMTP, and supports multiple accounts. Initially, its development was overseen by Netscape, but with the acquisition of Netscape by AOL in 1998, its codebase development was handed over to the Mozilla Foundation, originally created by Netscape, and therefore became based on the Mozilla Mail & Newsgroups component of the open-source Mozilla Suite.
However, in 2007, after the release of the Netscape Navigator 9 browser, Netscape confirmed that it would develop an email client, now called Netscape Messenger 9. The new version was based on Mozilla Mail’s successor, Mozilla Thunderbird.
