XOOPS (extensible object-oriented portal system) – a content management system (CMS) application that facilitates the creation of a web portal. XOOPS can be installed on a web server that can interpret the PHP language (e.g., Apache); a MySQL database system is also required (currently the only supported system).
This system is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), meaning it can be used, modified, and distributed free of charge. Any modified versions must also be licensed under the GPL.
The XOOPS system is modular, and to create a functional system, you must download the necessary modules for your installation. Examples include: News, Forum, Download, Web Links, MyAlbum, and extCal. XOOPS also supports integration with IPB, SMF, LifeType, and WordPress scripts.
Xoops was founded by Ono Kazumi (Onokazu) from Japan. Development of the system began in 2001; version 1.0 (Release Candidate 1) was released on January 1, 2002. Since 2007, Taiwen Jiang from China has been primarily responsible for the project.
Xoops has been recommended as a CMS and portal system in various magazines and portals. For example, in its April 2008 issue, Adobe Inc.’s Edge newsletter rated the three systems Drupal, Joomla, and Xoops as ideal for building e-commerce sites. In the Open Source CMS Awards, presented annually by the British publisher Packt, Xoops regularly achieves one of the top five places.
Xoops has successfully participated in several Asian open source competitions and won the grand prize at the Open Source Software Challenge in Korea in 2009.
