Delicious (delicious.com; previously: del.icio.us) – a website that allows you to collect and categorize links to your favorite websites. It appeared in 2003 and was developed by Joshua Schachter, co-creator of the Memepool software. It was acquired by Yahoo! in 2005.
Since 2008, the website has promoted, due to numerous misunderstandings (e.g. impersonation of other websites), one domain delicious.com (earlier, since its foundation, it was known under a shorter, but also harder to remember address).
Delicious is a social bookmarking system. It allows you to easily add pages you would like to have in your personal link collection, categorize those pages using keywords, and share it not only with your own web browser and machines, but also with other users.
Delicious used a non-hierarchical categorization system based on keywords. Each user could tag each link with a number of arbitrary keywords (see: Folksonomy). It was also possible to browse links from all users that were tagged with a given keyword; for example, at delicious.com/tag/wiki you could see all links tagged with the keyword “wiki”. The service also made it easy to browse links added by users with similar interests.
Delicious had a simple HTML interface, with simple URLs. It also offered an API and RSS 1.0 feeds.
In June 2017 Delicious was acquired by Pinboard, and the bookmarking service was discontinued.
