Wala (“conversation”) is a simple, minimalist wiki, originally intended to facilitate quick and easy discussion. It requires only Perl, a “diff” tool, and a web server that performs basic CGI.

Wala integrates with other Perl programs and can be easily used as a comment engine for weblog systems, although this use currently requires some knowledge of Perl.

Although Wala is intentionally minimalistic and will remain so, it is under active development and several additional features are planned. Future versions may include macros, better versioning, more sophisticated markup options (via modules such as Text::Textile), and source code syntax highlighting.

Wala has been changed to be more user-friendly for casual readers and contributors. Editing the entire text of any page can be intimidating for many, especially when they just want to add a comment to the page. So Wala is a wiki with two major changes:
– At the bottom of each page is a text box that allows anyone to add to the page at any time, directly from that page. Their contributions are added at the bottom of the page, in a style similar to IRC chat conversations.
– You can still edit the text of any page at any time. However, the (usually bulky) navigation links at the bottom of each wiki page have been greatly reduced, making Wala pages less intimidating.

Wala is written in Perl and can be easily used in conjunction with other Perl scripts. It should work on most Linux or Unix web servers that support CGI.
