A.nnotate – a web service for storing and annotating documents. It was launched in 2008 and then closed on 30th of November 2023.
A.nnotate is the flagship product of Textensor Limited which was incorporated in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2005. The founders had been working for several years on technologies for information capture, storage and reuse in biosciences. Their vision led them to focus on ease of use and universal availability for the core concepts of annotation and collaboration, and they are proud to be able to make these publicly available in A.nnotate.
A.nnotate was an online annotation, collaboration and indexing system for documents and images, supporting PDF and MS Office formats. Instead of emailing different versions of a document back and forth you can now all comment on a single read-only copy online. Unlike online word processors, the document is displayed in high quality with fonts and layout just like the printed version. It is easy to use and runs in all common web browsers, with no software or plugins to install.
Hosted solutions were available for individuals and workgroups. For enterprise users the full system is available for local installation. Special discounts apply for educational use. A.nnotate technology can also be used to enhance existing document and content management systems with high quality online document viewing, annotation and collaboration facilities.
The free and subscription services are used by thousands of small businesses, researchers, students, designers and web developers. Enterprise customers include leading organizations in consultancy, finance, healthcare, insurance, universities, pharmaceuticals, publishing and the public sector.
Organizations that already have established document management solutions can add annotation capabilities on any document by adding a local A.nnotate server.
The server can run alongside existing systems with a range of connection options to meet most requirements. Only a few minor additions are required to CMS pages to add an A.nnotate option wherever a document is listed on the existing CMS. Clicking the link copies the document into A.nnotate (if it is not already there) and opens the annotatable version.
For tighter integration, you can share user ids and logins from your existing system to A.nnotate or embed the A.nnotate display within your own application. All the documents, metadata and annotations on the A.nnotate server are easily accessible through the extensive API.
