Omeka (Omeka Classic) – a free, open-source content management system for online digital collections.

As a web application, it allows users to publish and display cultural heritage objects and extends the system’s functionality with themes and plugins. This innovative and easier-to-use solution compared to traditional institutional repository software such as DSpace and Fedora, Omeka displays and uses the Dublin Core metadata standard.

The system is used for: digital libraries, historical tours, Open Science, regional information, geolocation guides, disciplinary repositories, OER repositories, online materials and knowledge repositories, virtual exhibitions and archives, as well as for sharing cultural heritage and creating historical collections.

The Omeka management system can be used by employees of public and private institutions that collect cultural assets (GLAM) and by individuals to create digital exhibitions, repositories, archives, or GPS-based guides. It offers the following features:
– virtual exhibition management
– plug-in system
– management of various files
– metadata management
– graphical theme management
– user management.

In November 2017, the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media released Omeka S, a new version of the system intended for institutional use. It allows for hosting multiple websites that share a common resource pool, such as Wikidata. Omeka Classic supports individual projects and educators, operating alongside the new version – Omeka S.

The Omeka name and logo are registered trademarks of the Corporation for Digital Scholarship.
Omeka is a Swahili word meaning to display or arrange goods, to speak, to unfold, to unpack.
