Contao (previous name: TYPOlight) – an open-source, free CMS that allows you to create professional websites and scalable web applications. It supports XHTML, HTML5 and CSS standards and is W3C/WAI compliant. The first release of the program was published in 2006 by Leo Feyer.

Contao offers a set of features such as:
– Extended editing capabilities – copy and move records via clipboard, edit multiple records at once, and restore previous versions. Authors can format text using the built-in TinyMCE text editor, which also has the ability to check text in multiple languages.
– Perfect page structure – Contao supports different page types (e.g. regular or redirected pages) and multi-page installations (several domains or services). The administrator has full control, regardless of whether the page is hidden, password protected, cached, or indexed for search, and can publish them manually or automatically at a time specified by him.
– Permissions granting system – allows you to control access to each field in the admin panel. Access rights can be granted to individual users or groups, and the level of user permissions is also dependent on the access rights assigned to individual groups.
– Form generator – allows you to generate any type of form (template) for the page, which will be automatically validated and sent by email or saved in the database.
– Full-text search engine – has support for searching information by phrase or full sentences.
– Built-in CSS template support – automatically creates the page structure, depending on the defined style. Existing style templates can be imported and managed in the system control panel.
– Built-in file manager – supports sending files to the system via FTP. The file manager automatically generates image thumbnails and creates a preview, which allows you to edit the sent files. Files and folders can be copied, moved, edited, deleted, and their names can be changed.
– Support for mobile devices – the system has the ability to centrally or individually configure the format for images.
– Built-in news generator – RSS and Atom
– Built-in calendar module – supports multiple calendars, all-day, multi-day, open, closed, and regular (recurring) events.
– Built-in newsletter – allows you to subscribe to messages in HTML or plain text format, import from a CSV file, and personalize messages sent to recipients.
– Wide set of additional modules – Contao repositories offer hundreds of modules that extend the number of CMS functions. The system admin panel offers the ability to browse, install, update and remove modules.
– Easy way to update – Live Update Service, which is a commercial add-on, allows you to update Contao via a few mouse clicks in the admin panel.
