BlueSpice – a free and open-source wiki, web based application. The BlueSpice project was originally initiated by IBM (“bluepedia”) and is being developed by the German company Hallo Welt! since 2007.

In 2011, Hallo Welt! published his wiki as an open source application. A stable version of BlueSpice for MediaWiki was released on July 4, 2011.
The first release of BlueSpice was a set of extensions for MediaWiki. Now it is a complete distribution containing the latest release of MediaWiki as a base, offering in a free version over 50 extensions and a completely different user interface. In fall 2013, Hallo Welt! released a completely revamped version of BlueSpice 2. In 2014, BlueSpice for MediaWiki became the Translatewiki.net project.

BlueSpice is written in the PHP programming language and uses the MySQL, Apache / IIS, Tomcat databases (optional). BlueSpice can be installed on top of an existing MediaWiki installation or as a standalone application.

BlueSpice free is an entry-level, no-cost version of BlueSpice pro. It sits on top of an existing MediaWiki without interfering with its architecture, adds lots of user-friendly features and supplements it with a multitude of helpful functions for teams and small businesses.
